People who pay to do things like this apparently improve their sales.

In what was described by some as the biggest news story of the year, Nielsen Analytics announced that companies that advertise have better growth in sales than companies that don’t.

“The numbers speak for themselves: advertising helps sales,” said Nielsen CEO Susan Whiting. “We even went over our numbers twice, just to be sure.”

The announcement came just one day after Nielsen announced that broadband video was a good place for advertisers to reach younger audiences.

“Both of these releases come as great news to us!” stated YouTube VP of Sales Tony Nethercutt. “We had no idea that there were so many young people using our site. Sure, we’re serving over 100 million videos a day to a young, Internet-savvy audience, but we had no idea we could help advertisers reach younger audiences. Also, hearing that advertising helps businesses, I’m going to have to talk with Chad [Hurley] (YouTube Chief Operating Officer) about maybe doing some advertising ourselves!”

The back to back announcements served as a one-two punch to companies everywhere. Prior to these statements, companies had no idea advertising was good for business, nor that YouTube was a smart place to reach younger consumers.
